School Groups Can Experience Colonial History Locally with Classroom Field Trips
to Smith-Appleby House Museum, Smithfield, RI

School groups can experience Colonial history locally with a host of educational programs designed for students of all ages at the nearby Smith-Appleby House Museum in Smithfield, RI.

SMITHFIELD, RI – The historic Smith-Appleby House Museum in Smithfield offers a variety of educational programs for students on school field trips to experience what daily life was like in the 18th century.

“The programs offer Rhode Island schools and educators a local opportunity to bring Colonial life alive for their students by providing a real-life context that supplements their classroom lessons,” said Maggie Botelho, treasurer, Smith-Appleby House Museum.

Led by Museum staff in Colonial-era costume, students learn about daily living in 18th century Rhode Island and the 316-year history and architecture of the home; examine period furnishings, clothing and household items; and participate in hands-on demonstrations, activities, and games.

School field trip programs are arranged by appointment so that the Museum staff can consult with educators to design program activities to best meet the educational goals, ages, and interests of their students.

Similar programs are also available for scout troops, historical groups, community associations, clubs, and other organizations.

The Smith-Appleby House was originally constructed circa 1696 as a one-room stone-ender with a loft above. It was built by Elisha Smith, the grandson of John Smith (The Miller) — one of Roger Williams’ original party of six men who left the Massachusetts Bay Colony and founded Providence. Over the years, later generations of the family expanded the House, which today totals 12 rooms.

The Smith-Appleby House Museum is on the National Register of Historic Places and is headquarters to The Historical Society of Smithfield. It’s located at 220 Stillwater Rd. in Smithfield, RI, just off I-295 (Exit 8-B).
